It’s been said that Methodism was “born in song.” I can believe it. Charles Wesley, one of our founders, wrote more than 6,000 hymns. He and John Wesley understood the power of music to reach people’s hearts and minds. There are messages that music can convey in ways that prose or even poetry cannot.
I’ve struggled this week with what to write. My brain is too full. My soul is tired. We are headed to Holy Week, and I feel like Christmas was just a month ago. Hans Christian Andersen is famously paraphrased with the quote “When words fail, music speaks.” In that vein, I have created a playlist on Spotify for Holy Week and Easter. Listen in order, and you will move from Palm Sunday through Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Holy Saturday and finally arrive at Easter. May the music speak to your soul.
