I am thankful for this village of people.

About a week ago there was a committee meeting at church and several of us arrived early. The “early arrivals” began with greetings and pleasantries, and then quickly jumped into very deep conversation about personal struggles regarding our children. We each represented varying ages of children (from infants to 12 years old) and although our struggles were different, they were all quite similar. “How do we support our children when they are scared/worried?” In the 10-15 minutes that the early arrivals visited, we each shared new ideas to try, heard a fresh perspective, felt a revived hope for a peaceful evening at home, and were renewed with a sense of support from others. We were a support to one another. We were a village of caring parents. It’s unlikely that we would have picked up the phone to call and ask one another how to handle the situations we were dealing with. However, those 10-15 minutes before the committee meeting turned into a special moment where members of our “village” were able to connect with each other for the benefit of our children.

I am thankful for this village of people and our connections to one another. I am thankful for a place to share joys, challenges, and concerns. I am thankful for a village of people who support one another. What a blessing!

You may have seen the Pebble Blessings that the children made this fall. They were small, decorated rocks with stickers on the back and the rocks were to be left in a public place to be found by someone else. The stickers on the back encourage the finder of the rock to post a photo on Facebook and tag #PebbleBlessing #FUMCHurst. Some of you may have purchased a Pebble Blessing at Harvest Festival. I am excited to report that a Pebble Blessing was found by an 8-year-old boy who is not connected to this church. His mom posted on Facebook that they found it at La Hacienda Restaurant in Colleyville out on the porch. They loved the story and they felt it was such a blessing for him to find it! I was so encouraged to read her words and feel her excitement. I was even more excited to share the story with the Mission Possible Kids group this week. It is amazing that a simple act of children decorating rocks can connect the children to people and the purpose of being invitational for our church.

I am thankful for this village of purpose. I am thankful that we have a variety of committees and groups who connect with one another to focus on the purpose that this village seeks to serve. I am thankful for the work that is being done right here in our local village and I am thankful for the connections we have to villages far away. I am thankful for a village that is always inviting other people to join in the purpose and missions. What a blessing!

I am excited about entering the season of Advent. I am excited about the children and their families participating in the ABCs and Do Re MIs e-devotional as they connect with God this Advent season and prepare for the birth of the Christ child. I am excited about how many people had a hand in preparing the Advent kits for our children this year. It truly took a lot of people to prepare the e-devotional and Advent Kits. All of the adults and children involved in the preparation knew that all of their work would lead to children and families being able to have special items to help create a meaningful Advent experience as they connect with God and prepare for the birth of the Christ child. Once all of the Advent Kits were prepared, the Mission Possible Kids group prayed over the kits and prayed for each church family who would be receiving a kit on November 27th. I am thankful that in this village we focus on remembering the true purpose for this season.
